Unsolicited messages and even calls from the providers of telecommunications are becoming embarrassing to subscribers. The major telecoms providers in Nigeria are Mtn, Airtel, Glo and Etisalat. These telecoms providers keep sending messages to subscribers soliciting their interest to like or participate in raffles or Promos. At times more than ten messages are sent within 24 hours and as one is deleting some, others are sent.
Apart
from SMS, these providers also use numbers to call subscribers. Some numbers
used to call are even eleven digits which make subscribers to anxiously pick
the call in the hope that it is from a friend or customer only to hear a
machine voice asking to subscribe for one useless song from a musician for
N50/week or N100/month. I have personally blacklisted many of their numbers,
but surprisingly the more one number is blacklisted, the more they use a new one.
For
MTN, it usually requests customers who don’t want unwanted SMS to “text HELP to 2442”
to stop getting them. Ironically the more I send HELP to 2442, the more the
unwanted SMS are sent. It seems the regulatory body: Nigerian Communications Commission
(NCC) is helpless. NCC should sanction these telecoms providers.
