Matthew 12:22-30;
Luke 11:14-28; Mark 3:20-27
In the account in
the book of Matthew 12:22-30 some people brought a certain man possessed with a
devil to Jesus for deliverance. The demon in the man caused him blind and dumb.
Jesus cast out the devil and the man became whole. The miracle caused divisions
among the people, especially the Pharisees. While a faction said Jesus used the
power given to Him by Beelzebub, the prince of the devil, the other group
demanded for a sign from Jesus to proof that He had the power of God.
Human beings are
evil and wicked or else why didn’t the people appreciate Jesus who had cast out
a devil and made a person whole? We have such people everywhere in the world
who condemn even good deed. Think of it: how can a devil cast out a devil? The
sons of the accusers who cast out devils, do they use the power of the devil to
do so? For the faction who accused Jesus of casting out devils through
Beelzebub, He replied:
“Every Kingdom divided against itself is brought to
desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. If Satan also be
divided against himself, how shall his kindom stand? because ye say that I cast
out devils through Beelzebub”. Luke 11:17-18.
What it means is
that the accusers should understand that Satan can't be foolish to give power to his
followers to use to cast Satan’s spirits from people. If this happens, Satan
will lose followers and create enmity for himself. Jesus is the Son of God and has
brought the Kingdom of God to men if they can believe. Those who will believe
not will be scattered and doomed forever.
For those seeking
for a sign, Jesus described them as evil generation wanting to see before they
believe. Jesus therefore reminded them the sign of Jonah. “For as Jonas was a
sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation”.
Luke 11:30.
In this case, Jesus
likened the world to Ninevite, and just as God sent Jonah to warn the people of
Ninevites, so Jesus had been sent to the world to preach the message of
repentance and to reconcile people to God. The people of Ninevite who repented were forgiven of their sins, so it shall be for the people of the world who repent
– God will forgive them their sins. Jesus is greater than Jonah for He is the
Son of God sent to the whole world and not to a particular city.
