Waiting for Gov. Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State in Jail by Ijuo Okpe

Gov. Fayose (Left) and President Buhari (Right)

Both the conspirator and the person who actually committed the crime are guilty of the same offence. Mr. Ayodele Peter Fayose of Ekiti State, Nigeria has been represented himself as someone great and the fighter for masses. He believes in himself so much that he pretends not to have any iota of fear in his humble self.

There are weighty allegations of corruption leveled against him. The election that brought Mr. Fayose to power in 2014 was fraughted with irregularities, but Dr. Kayode Fayemi who was governing the State that time refused to challenge the result of the election in court. There was no doubt that the federal government then under President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GEJ) used maximum power to induce the electorate with money to vote for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). It is proved evidently that the federal government then used the military and the police to intimidate the opposition.

Some prominent politicians including governors from the opposition Party were prevented from coming to the State to campaign for the then state governor. The then presidency sent a chartered private jet loaded with money said to be over a billion naira to Ekiti State before the election. Chief Obanikoro, one of the Chieftains of the PDP who was then the Minister of State for Defence was the one who led the army of people who took the loots to Ekiti State. It was said that the money which was parked in several bags was too big to be carried in a single trip and so the aircraft had to go two times.

Mr. Fayose was the beneficiary of the billions of tax payers’ money used for his political ambition. However, it is shocked that Mr. Fayose has not seen anything wrong in the crime. Fayose fails to understand that if somebody steals with the consent or knowledge of another and for the purpose of giving the stolen or part of the stolen item or money to the other or using it for the benefit of that other person, the beneficiary of the crime is equally guilty of the same crime.

Mr. Fayose cannot exonerate himself of the crime of looting or corruption that brought him to power as governor of Ekiti State. Mr. Fayose keeps blaming President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB) and we agree with him that Mr. Buhari is to blame for not acting like a military man by using federal might to prosecute issues like his colleague, the former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. Buhari is to blame for not causing political tension in Ekiti State in order to force the State House of Assembly to impeach Ayodele Fayose. Buhari is to blame for leaving Fayose alone to complete his four year tenure.

Mr. Fayose should stop calling Buhari all sorts of names. He should stop pretending to be saint that he is not. He prayed fervently for Buhari to die, unfortunately for him, God has not granted his prayer until he is about to finish his final term in office as governor. As governor, knowing the type of person that is now President of the country, Fayose might have done everything to avoid smearing or soiling himself in his second chance as governor, but believe me, he cannot escape the wrath of laws that he violated on his way to power.

Ekiti State High Court built by Gov. Ayodele Fayose

Mr. Ayodele Fayose is not a hero and comparing himself to human rights fighter like Gani Fawehinmi of blessed memory is an insult on our sensibility. He built one of the best High Courts in the country which has just been commissioned – applause for that, but this cannot erase the crime record against him. We want Fayose in handcuff. We want him to be arraigned in court and prosecuted.

If Ayodele Fayose is not prosecuted, there will be no deterrent, and some year in the future, federal government under a naïve President like GEJ would take our collective tax money to give a state governorship flag bearer of his Party in order to secure a victory for his Party leaving the country in a vicious cycle.

This prophetic article was first published in our blog www.mightyvoice.com.ng on May 26, 2018 before the Ekiti State gubernatorial election that saw the defeat of Fayose's anointed PDP candidate.
