Immunization and Vaccination: A call for Co-operation with the Government

Every year Government at all levels budget and spend so much on vaccinations of children of a particular age category in Nigeria. This medical exercise is not peculiar or restricted to Nigeria as the ‘World Health Organisation’ (WHO), an organ of the ‘United Nations Organisation’ (UNO) saddled with the responsibility of providing health care services all over the world always ensure that no government of any nation fail its duty to provide health care delivery to her citizens. Every government is under a mandate to carry out immunization exercise periodically every year, so that children should be vaccinated against diseases such as measles, polio, chicken pox, small pox just to mention few.

Immunization exercise is an inexcusable duty of every government, and there is no acceptable excuse for non-compliance. This obligation to vaccinate children is not expected to be affected by economic meltdown or recession of any country. Life is very precious and no budget allocated to the health should ever be considered to be too much.

Prior to and during the vaccination exercise, governments at all levels do use both the electronic and press media to sanitize the people as well as creating public awareness. This is done also in local languages so that parents and guardians would bring all their children and wards of the stated age category out for immunization.

Health workers are usually trained and specially recruited for the exercise. To ensure that all the children concerned are vaccinated, health workers usually go from house to house, as well as places of worship such as churches and mosques.

Government always means well for the citizenry. However, it is shocked that there is always misinformation each time immunization exercise is to be carried out. Some parents and guardians, especially in the northern Nigeria do not usually bring their children and wards out for vaccinations on the excuse that the exercise is a ploy to reduce national population. In their misinformed view, the females will not have children in future as the purpose of immunization is to cause infertility to the females and make them permanently barren.

Oh my God! Those behind the deception and misinformation are advised to fear God and desist from this devilish conduct. Immunization and vaccination are designed to save lives and not destroy lives. Those agents of the devil who go about presenting wrong information to the ignorant parents and guardians should know that even the children and wards of those in government are also vaccinated during every exercise. Even if you erroneously believe that those in government have grown up children that are not within the age brackets for immunization, I want to use this medium to educate you that, Mr. President, some Governors, some Ministers and many others in authority have grand children who are due for and also vaccinated, and it is my belief you don’t think these people would want to kill their grandchildren.

What is vaccination? What is the difference between vaccination and immunization? For purpose of clarity and understanding, it is imperative to take pain to explain the purpose and meanings of vaccination and immunization.

Vaccination is done usually by injection to protect a person from future infection so as to protect the person from “becoming immune to the infection”. Vaccination therefore is:

“When a vaccine is administered to you usually by injection” purposely to prevent or protect future infection, while: “Immunization is what happens in your body after you have the vaccination. The vaccine (administered) stimulates your immune system so that it can recognize the disease and protect you from future infection”.
