INFLUENCE AND SERVICE IN MINISTRY (2) BY NIYI OLOYEDE

AREAS TO LEAD YOURSELF FOR HEALTHY LEADERSHIP INFLUENCE CHRISTIAN LIFE

Jesus is the ultimate Leader. Your top priority should be to have a good relationship with God. Religion is not synonymous with spirituality. John Maxwell says, “A leader lives with people to know their problems. A leader lives with God in order to solve them”. You cannot lead well l if you have not been in touch with God. What you do daily to strengthen your walk with God is what will help your ability to lead yourself and others, John 15:1-5. Invest time and money on developing your spiritual life.

Integrity
The dictionary defines integrity as moral soundness, probity, wholeness, completeness. It is impossible to become a person of influence if the foundation of integrity is not in place. When people around you know that you are a person of integrity, they know that you want to add value to their lives, hence they trust you. When you earn people’s trust, you will begin to earn their confidence, which is one of the keys to influence.

Integrity is about being a person of sound character, being honest. This is needed in leadership. No wonder Abraham Lincoln says, “God grant that men of principle shall be our principal men”.

Your character is who you are while your reputation is what people know you for. Character is what you do when nobody is watching. Philips Brooks says, “Character is made in the small moments of our lives”. People today are desperate and looking for leaders they can trust, persons of good character. People will follow you because of who you are and what you represent.

Emotional Balance
No one will follow a leader whose personal life is based on feelings and whose emotions get the better of him. You must be in charge of your emotions if you want to be a man of influence. You must regularly work on your emotions. A leader who is a slave of his emotions will lose respect.

Attitude
Someone says ‘your attitude determines your altitude’.  This is true with leadership. You can’t go far in the school of leadership without the development of a positive attitude. Your attitude talks about your conduct, manners, comportment, and behaviour. It is either positive or negative. Your attitude determines your relationship with people. It determines how you look at things. You have got to work on your attitude.
