HOME LIFE
If you want to be a
person of influence, you have to lead your children and wards well. A good home
is your credential for leadership.
DEVELOP OTHER PERSONS MINDSET
Give people around
you a sense of belonging. John Maxwell says, “People always move toward someone
who increases them and away from anyone who decreases them”. Be an encourager. Don’t
withhold praise. Encouragement makes others want to follow you. Look at what William
A. Ward says, “Flatter me, and I may not forgive you. Encourage me, and I will
not forget you”.
Moreover, develop
yourself in the areas of showing respect and appreciation. “Brains are like
hearts – they go where they are appreciated” says Robert McNamara.
Show people you care
about them.
Take interest in
people and what concerns them (Matthew 9:35-38)
“You can make more
friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in
two years by trying to get other people interested in you”, Dale Carnegie.
INCREASE PEOPLE'S CAPACITY FOR GROWTH
To become a person
of influence, you have to come alongside your people and get involved in their
lives. You have to help them become all they can be. In doing this, you have to
see the people’s potential, come up with a vision for their future, tap into
their passion, address character issues and devote your attention on their strengths.
- Show interest in their growth
- Go out of your way to add value to the people around you. This sends a signal that you want them to succeed in life.
- Invest in their growth. Don’t keep what you have to yourself. Share it in helping others. People will follow you for what you have done for them.
BE A GOOD LISTENER
Listening builds
relationship. Work on yourself to be a good listener. “To be interesting, be
interested” says, Charles Northham. David
Schwartz has this to say: “Big people monopolize the listening. Small people monopolize
the talking”.
LEARN TO WIN WITH PEOPLE
You will become the
kind of leader others want to follow if you are not a leader who wants to use
people for the mere fact of winning. A great leader must lead people so that
they can all win together.
BE A VISIONARY AND PASSIONATE LEADER
Kevin Hogan writes, “People
gravitate toward passionate individuals”. He adds, “People who have passion for
life ideas, products, services, and beliefs will be much more effective in
persuading others to their point of view than will dispassionate people. People
who have the ability to attract a vision for others to see or believe have
devoted throngs”.
