Labour issues 14 days ultimatum to Federal Government

Nigerian Labour leaders in a joint news Conference held in Lagos, Wednesday, 12 September, 2018 gave the Federal government 14 days ultimatum to conclude the issue of minimum wage or else the government should be ready to face industrial action. Labour leaders are members of the Minimum Wage Committee set up by the federal government in 2016, and they said, the government representatives headed by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige were not serious with the issue of minimum wage.

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba accused the Minister of Labour and Employment of treating the issue of minimum wage with levity. The Labour leaders expressed their displeasure when the Minister adjourned the committee meeting indefinitely on the excuse that he wanted to consult further with the federal government.

Comrade Wabba said:
We view his supposed pronouncement with great concern, suspicion and outrage.

“This new antic certainly is not acceptable to Nigerian workers, who had expected a new Minimum Wage since 2016”.
