Avoid Profane and Babbling

Profane and babbling is one of the seven things Apostle Paul has advised followers of Christ to avoid. Profane is taking the name of God in vain.  According to Dictionary, Profane is ‘Treating sacred things with contempt, disrespect, irreverence, or scorn’. To profane is to blaspheme which is speaking of or about God irreverently. We are guilty of profanity when we descrate a holy place.

God’s 4th Commandment in Exodus 20:7 says:
Thou shall not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Definitely God will hold people who profane guilty for taking His name in vain. We should speak  what will glorify God. We should marshal our thoughts and guide our utterances even while preaching the gospel to others. A pastor who uses the name of God to ask people to give prophet offering for them to get rich is guilty of taking the name of God in vain. A pastor who calls people robbers using Malachi 3:9-11 because he wants people to pay tithes is guilty of profanity and shall be in danger of God’s judgment.

Babbling is senseless or idle talk. Christians should talk wisely. Comedians who use the name of God or Holy Ghost to cast jokes commit sin against God. The fans of the comedians are equally guilty and shall suffer the same judgment. God has warned that we should not listen to such comedies or buy their cassettes.

The advice of Paul to Timothy is:

O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so-called. 1Timothy 6:20, KJV (Underline mine)

Timothy, guard what God has entrusted to you. Avoid godless, foolish discussions with those who oppose you with their so-called knowledge. 1Timothy 6:20, NLT
Many Christians take to social media to scandalize others. It is ungodly to insult or write negative comments about others. You can criticize constructively. For instance, it is evident that Bishop David Oyedepo of the Church popularly known as Winner bought four private jets and this caused many condemnations from both Christians and non-Christians. But you commit sin if while criticizing his action you insult and curse him.

Profane and babbling lead many people to wander from faith and Paul cautions:

'Some people have wandered from the faith by following such foolishness'. 1Tim.6:21, NLT

Are you a true Christian? Genuine Christians should avoid profane (godless discussions) and babblings (foolish talk).
