“But godliness with
contentment is great gain”. 1Timothy 6:6
We are children of God and our inheritance is in heaven.
Jesus has warned against desire to gain the world. Heaven is a beautiful place
full of pleasures and joy. We should follow after righteousness and shun
worldly things that would cause us to fall. We are cautioned not to envy the
rich whose sources of wealth we know not. The rich believe that their possessions
are a sign of the love of God in their lives. You might be in the Church where
even Pastors and fellow Christians who form the opinion that people who are
poor are not good Christians, because, according to them, Jesus came so that we
might be rich. These people are not working for God. You should not be carried
away by the doctrines of men.
The truth is: in this
world we are bound to suffer. God permits sufferings here and the reason is to
draw us to Himself. We should heed the admonition of Apostle Paul not to
associate with the ungodly people. We should withdraw from arrogant rich
people. We were born naked and we shall die and be buried with nothing of
value.
“For we brought
nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out”.
1Tim.6:7
The advice of God to His chosen is that they should be
satisfied when they have food to eat and clothes to wear. Food, shelter and
clothing are the necessities of life that God wants us to desire to have. People
who pursue material things of this world fall into: “temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which
drown men in destruction and perdition”. (6 verse 9)
It is not sin to be rich in money and material things. You can
get rich legitimately. It is not written in the Bible that money is evil. What
is written is that ‘the love of money
is the root of all evil’. People take to robbery because of the love of money.
People kidnap fellow human beings and demand for ransoms because of money.
People kidnap fellow human beings for ritual purpose in order to get money. All
evils in the world are linked to the desire to have money to acquire material
things. People want to be prosperous and famous in this world, so many take to
crimes in order to get what they want to achieve their dreams.
“For the love of money
is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from
the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1Timothy 6:10
Apostle Paul admonishes us to flee things that will ensnare
us and ‘follow after righteousness,
godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness…’ (6:11)
Let us avoid anything that will lead us away from our
heavenly Father. Our home is not in the world. Life here is short. Life in heaven
is eternal. Life in hell is also eternal, but full of sorrows and torments. Love
not the world. Whoever loves the world is automatically an enemy of God.
