Ask What I shall give thee. 1KIngs 3:5
At Gibeon, Solomon while dedicating the temple, sacrificed a thousand burnt offerings to God. God was very pleased and asked Solomon to request anything his heart desires that He should do for him. It was a blank cheque to King Solomon. In other words, God has given Solomon a cheque with Solomon David Jesse written on it as bearer, leaving the amount for Solomon to write on it.

If you were the one today, what amount will you write on the cheque knowing that you are dealing with God who has all at His beck and call? If God has appeared to you in a dream and asked you to present your requests to Him, with a promise that He is ready to give you whatever you will request of Him, what are those things you would ask of Him? God is ready to give you whatever you want in life and He asks you to list your wants, what will be the content of your list? That was the case of King Solomon.

In our time we would have asked for riches, long life and lives of our enemies. We want to be known all over the world, so we need money to buy private jets, build companies, build houses and hotels, build universities and colleges. We want to be famous and be celebrated, so we would have asked for anything that will make people to worship us.

But what did Solomon ask for? Solomon simply asked for wisdom and understanding in order to lead his people of Israel well.

Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge the people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people”.  1Kings 3:9
King Solomon called himself a “servant” while he called his subjects “a great people.” Instead of Solomon to give himself a respected title such as “His Royal Majesty” or “His Excellency” and such like, he simply regarded himself as ‘a servant’.

God was very pleased that Solomon did not ask for riches and the lives of his enemies. God did not only give Solomon wisdom and understanding, He also gave him riches and long life. God ensured there was no war during King Solomon’s reign.

1Kings 3
11. And God said unto him, Because you asked this thing, and hast not asked for theyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;

12. Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee wise and understanding  heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.

13. And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all the days.

As for long life, God gave Solomon a condition that he should live without sin to enjoy long life. If you are living in sin, you don’t have to waste your time praying for long life.

And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments…I will lengthen thy days. 1Kings 3:14
