How Confidence in God Saved King David from His Enemies

King David knew how to handle his enemies. He used not to do anything without going to God in prayer to ask for His favour. He faced more enemies than any human being before and after him. He was a man after God’s heart. When he had opportunity to kill King Saul, he didn’t. He was a loving husband and father. He delighted in the commandments and statutes of God. He feared God. He loved God with all his heart.

David’s confidence in God is well articulated in Psalm 27. He said the Lord was his light and salvation, therefore he feared no man or anything. With pure heart he believed that the Lord was the strength of his life and was not afraid of any person.

People who have no understanding of the Bible always argue that David used to pray that his enemies should die, and they use that as an excuse to pray against their enemies. I do challenge people to point out where David prayed that his enemies should fall down and die in the name of God in the Book of Psalm or anywhere in the Bible. I am yet to get response from such arguers.  Moreover we are followers of Jesus and not of David. We are Christians, that is followers of Christ and not Davidians, that is NOT followers of David. Even if it is found anywhere in the Bible where king David or any person prayed against the enemies, Jesus has corrected that, so the pertinent question is, whose instruction or command will you obey now? Remember David called Jesus his Lord and God.

Can you say a prayer like this in verse 2 of Psalm 27 quoted below is the prayer that the enemies should fall down and die?

When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.

In the above quoted verse 2 of Psalm 27, the action was in the past. David was referring to an incident that happened to him in the past and how God delivered him. In the verse following, David said his ‘’heart shall not fear’’ any time any day because he has confidence in God based on the past experience of how God delivered him. In future, he knew the same God will not abandon him.

For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. Psalm 27:5

David was full of thanksgiving to God for His marvellous works. He even said in verse 10 that even when his father and mother abandoned him, he had confidence in God and therefore nothing would trouble his mind.

When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up. (Verse 10)

All you have to do in any situation is to seek the face of the Lord. Pray fervently. Pray until you feel the presence of God. Go to Him with praises, thanksgiving, songs and hymns. Have faith and fret not. Ask for His mercy. About his enemies, David’s prayer is:

Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty. (Psalm 27:10)

In conclusion, King David has advised us to do this if we want God’s protection;

Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD. Psalm 27:14
