Enemies Throw Prophet Jeremiah into a Well

God is looking for people like Jeremiah, Samuel, Isaiah, Elijah, Elisha, Ezekiel, Daniel and other biblical Prophets to tell people about him.

Perhaps not many Christians know that biblical Prophet Jeremiah was thrown into a dry well and left to die. Jeremiah was a fearless prophet sent by God. He introduced himself as a born prophet. Before he was formed in his mother’s womb God had anointed and ordained him to be His mouthpiece to all the nations, Jeremiah 1:5. And like any human being, Jeremiah was afraid about his assignment, but God assured him that He would protect him.

Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee. Jeremiah 1:8

Jeremiah faced many enemies of God. Kings and subjects didn’t want to hear the truths coming from Jeremiah. They had itching ears, and to them their desires were what mattered. False prophecies were sweet to them and they preferred the prophets who could tell them good tidings. Jeremiah therefore contended with the forces of darkness, but he was unperturbed. He delivered his prophecies as he heard from God.

Jeremiah faced enemies of God from all fronts. King Zedekiah, the King of Judah during which time Jeremiah was sent by God was not comfortable with Jeremiah. Each time Zedekiah sent to Prophet Jeremiah expecting to hear good prophecy about the nation, Jeremiah would prophesy that the people would be captured and enslaved by the Babylonian King.

Remember King Zedekiah was made King by Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon and he paid allegiance to Babylon. King Zedekiah whose father was Josiah wanted to hear what pleased him, whereas God’s message should not be twisted to please him. Here was the prophecy of Jeremiah that landed him in trouble:

He told the King that he would be delivered into the hand of the King of Babylon. Jeremiah 37:17

King Zedekiah felt bad about the prophecy of Jeremiah and invited other Prophets who prophesied otherwise that all would be well with the nation, and nothing of what Jeremiah had said would happen to the King and the nation. King Zedekiah then commanded that Jeremiah should be committed into the prison. Then the following four men: Shephatiah, Gedaliah, Jucal and Pashur suggested that Jeremiah should be put to death instead, because his negative prophecies were weakened the mighty warriors of Israel and weakened their spirits.

Therefore the princes said unto the King, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt. Jeremiah 18:4

King Zedekiah accepted the advice of the princes, but exonerated himself of the consequence of their action against Jeremiah. The King answered them and said:

Behold he is in your hand: for the king is not he that can do any thing against you.   Jeremiah 38:5

Then the people took Jeremiah and threw him into a deep dry well intending that he would die of suffocation. But God used a certain black man by name Ebedmelech from Ethiopia, a foreigner for that matter to rescue Jeremiah. When Ebedmelech heard what the people did to Jeremiah, he went to the King’s house and told the King.  Ebedmelech’s words to King Zedekiah:

My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, Whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die for hunger in the place where he is: for there is no more bread in the city. Jeremiah 38:9

King Zedekiah commanded Ebedmelech to go with thirty able men to bring out Jeremiah from the dungeon. Then Jeremiah who had been in the deep dry well for hours was brought out alive.

Graphic Pix: Prophet Jeremiah being pulled out of the Well
Prophet Jeremiah was not deterred; and he continued to prophesy as led by God. Several hours in the well didn’t discourage Jeremiah. He was ready to suffer the more and even to die.

Prophet Jeremiah was not making money from his prophetic assignment. He didn’t exploit anybody or see it  as a business. He was called and he saw it as such. It was a call to obey. Can we have such prophets in our time whose mission is not to make money and to be rich and famous? God help us in Jesus name, Amen!  God is looking for people like Jeremiah, Samuel, Isaiah, Elijah, Elisha, Ezekiel, Daniel and other biblical Prophets to tell people about him.
