Temptation is Not Sin

No human being is immune from temptation. Jesus was tempted by Satan to show that anyone born of woman into this world will be tempted. How you handle temptation is what makes or mars you. Jesus says we should pray that we should not be led into temptation. What it means is that we should pray against evil thoughts that will lead us into temptation. Our prayer life should be deep.

A person sins when he yields himself to temptation. Temptation per se is not sin, but when a person lacks self-control, he would do whatever tempts him in order to satisfy his needs or desires. Doing what a person is tempted to do is what a sin is. Jesus told Peter that devil was about to use him, but He had rebuked him.

If temptation is sin, then no one can go to heaven. We all without exemption get tempted, but the reaction to the tempter and action taken by the tempted are what differentiate the children of God from unbelievers.

The only way to overcome temptation is submitting to God. James has written that we should draw near to God, and God will draw near to us. We should be sober and vigilant. We should be in the mood of prayer always.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. James 4:7-8

Advisedly, we should keep the word of God in our hearts so that the devil will have no opportunity to operate therein. We should always listen to the sweet voice of God which He speaks through the Holy Spirit.

When tempted, learn to quickly go to God in prayer. God blesses those who endure temptation. In the midst of lack, please do not steal. When seriously hungry, please do not listen to the devil tempting you to go and steal. You are very poor and in serious need, go to God in prayer and He will send you a helper. Please be patient in every situation. Sometime God allows temptation to try you and here is what James says:

Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. James 1:12

What tempts many people is their ambition to get rich and become famous in life. That is why Pastors should mind their prosperity messages in the church. Prosperity message draws people away from God. God does not tempt people, rather people get tempted because of their inordinate lusts for material things.

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempted he any man:

But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. James 1:13-14

Take this advice not to listen to the voice of the tempter, and you will save your soul from damnation.

  1. I am blessed and i strongly believed that this article will bless many others. The erroneous belief of many in the body of Christ that Christians don't get tempted has been put straight by this article. The good news is that God wouldn't allow us to be tempted beyond our power. More grace in Jesus name.
