Why You Must Not Envy the Rich People

We all want good things in life. We want to be rich and enjoy the life to the fullest. Ironically the people that fear God and keep His words struggle more than the ungodly. The God-fearing people pray hard and ceaselessly to get what they want, but they wonder why God does not respond to their prayers quickly or even at all in some cases. That is the lamentation of Asaph, the Psalmist in Psalm 73. Asaph lamented greatly seeing the wicked and evil men getting rich and have everything they desire with ease.

Asaph wonders why wicked people are not in trouble. Everything works well with the ungodly. The wicked have money. They are comfortable. They are very proud and arrogant because money is not their problem. They can fly all over the world. Many of them have private jets. They can lounge in any expensive hotel. Their children lack nothing. They send their children to private schools. They can afford anything they want in life.

The hearts of the evil men are not pure. They do not marshal their thoughts before they speak. They behave as if they own the whole world. They are corrupt. They cheat, exploit and oppress the poor with impunity. Asaph says:

Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish. They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily. They set their mouths against heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth. Therefore his people return hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them. And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High? Behold, these are the ungodly who prosper in the world; they increase in riches. Psalm 73:7-12

The ungodly do not believe that God is omniscience, so they blaspheme at will, thinking God is not all-knowing; yet despite their wickedness, they prosper and ‘increase in riches’. The wicked and evil men keep acquiring wealth – they live in luxury and have numerous houses, cars, and industries. Many of them live long. They have many things at their beck and call.

The Psalmist in his astonishment was envious of the ungodly and his words:

For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For there are no band in their death, but their strength is firm. They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men. Psalm 73:3-5

Then he went to the house of God to pray, and God opened his eyes to see the end of the wicked. Are you troubled that things are not working according to your plan and heart’s desire? Go to God in prayer as Asaph did and you will understand God and the way He does things.

When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me. Until I went into the Sanctuary of God; then understood I their end. Psalm 73:16-17

The ungodly have no good end. There is no hope for them. They will die and perish in hell fire. God shall destroy them ‘’that go a whoring from Him’’, so do not envy the ungodly who are having things going smoothly for them in this wicked world.
