Law is Not Meant for the Righteous People and Why Paul Delivered Hymenaeus and Alexander to Satan

1Timothy Chapter One: Apostle Paul advised Timothy to remain in Ephesus to help the Church there to grow. The reason Paul left Timothy in Ephesus was for him to present the true gospel to the people. There were some elders like Hymenaeus and Alexander who were teaching people wrong doctrines. Paul felt injured in his spirit, and instructed the young Timothy not to feel intimidated by the so-called elders who were preaching more about the laws of Moses and riches of this world.

Paul told Timothy not to allow any person to take advantage of his youthfulness to mislead him and the believers in Ephesus. These false teachers were teaching fables and endless genealogies that were not only fruitless, but were also led to endless unresolved questions.

Paul implored Timothy that the essence of the commandment of God is love and that love must come from a pure heart. Christians must have good conscience and sincere faith. Paul therefore charged Timothy not to be carried away by the false teachers whose main desire was to use the gospel to promote their egos in order to become popular, famous and rich.

These false teachers, Paul reminded Timothy knew only much about the laws of Moses, but despite their claim knowledge in law, they unfortunately lack the understanding of the deep meanings of the laws they professed to have mastered.

Law is good because of evil people in the world. However, law is not meant for the righteous. Why? The righteous fear God, therefore, they do not need law to guide their behaviours and conducts. Law is good because evil people are abound whose stock in trade is criminalities. Law therefore is required to guide and control the activities of the wicked or else perpetual anarchy will reign upon the world. Paul said:

Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine. 1Timothy 1:9-10

Paul thus charged Timothy not to allow the so-called senior Pastors in Ephesus to lead or intimidate him to teach doctrines other than the doctrines given by the Lord Jesus Christ which Paul taught him.

In fact, Paul even suspended Pastors Hymenaeus and Alexander for misleading people and destabilising the Church because of their personal interests. He told Timothy to hold unto ‘a good conscience…’ which people like Hymenaeus and Alexander ‘have made shipwreck. Paul’s charge to Timothy:

This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before thee, that thou by them mightiest war a good warfare;

Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:

Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme. 1Timothy 1:18-20

Can we in our time be bold like Paul not to do the bidden of the Church founder or senior Pastors who teach heresies?
