Growing up, my family made sure we received Islamic education, both in Guinea and after we moved to the U.S. When I became a Christian, no one knew. I was still attending Islamic studies while secretly reading the Bible.

One day, our Quranic teacher was teaching Surah Maryam, the chapter in the Quran that talks about Mary the mother of Jesus. He taught that Mary gave birth to Jesus under a palm tree and that Jesus spoke while still an infant in the cradle.

Because I had been reading the Bible, I knew some of the things he said were not true. While he continued teaching I kept shaking my head until he noticed.

He stopped the whole class, and asked “Why are you shaking your head?”

I stayed silent.

Then he said, “Since you seem to know the story better than I do, why don’t you come and teach the class?”

I still stayed silent. My sister warned me to stop before they called our mother.

The reason why I stayed silent was that if they had asked how I knew there was errors in what was been taught, they would discover I had been secretly reading the Bible and had come to believe in Jesus.

The Bible does not say Jesus spoke as an infant or that He was born under a palm tree. It says Mary gave birth to Him and laid Him in a manger.

That experience taught me not to be afraid of honest questions. To Seek the truth for myself. And that is exactly what I did—and my search led me to Jesus.

Jesus said, “Seek, and you will find.” — Matthew 7:7
