 WHEN HATE BECOMES A BOOMERANG

The Middle East is once again teaching the world a powerful lesson about hate, extremism and geopolitics.

For years, some extremists have portrayed Jews and Israel as enemies who must be destroyed. Christians have also been targets of religious hatred.

Today, Saudi Arabia, the home of Mecca and Medina, the two holiest cities in Islam, is facing attacks from Yemen's Houthis. Saudi Arabia says a drone was intercepted near Mecca, while the Houthis deny deliberately targeting the holy city.

What makes the situation particularly striking is the reported security cooperation and intelligence contacts involving Saudi Arabia, Israel and other countries.

This is the irony of geopolitics, yesterday's perceived enemy can become today's security partner when circumstances change.

The lesson is bigger than Saudi Arabia, Israel or the Houthis.

We have bunch of such extremism in Nigeria, especially in the Northern part of the country. Let this be a red alert to the Northern clerics who what to hide behind religion to perpetuate evil on fellow Nigerians, simply because they don't practice the same faith. 

Religious leaders and their followers should be careful about turning political conflicts into hatred against entire peoples or religions. 

Hate has a way of creating consequences that eventually come back to those who promote it.

May peace prevail in the Middle East, and may Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem and every place of worship remain protected from violence.

No matter how you hate Israel, you can never take away her central position when it comes to security in the middle East. Israel conflict in the middle East  has never be against religion but against terrorism and threat to security and peaceful coexistence.
