 3 American Mega Churches that Have Collapsed 

Across America massive church buildings are now being sold, abandoned or converted into Amazon warehouses. Churches that used to have 80, 000 worshippers 5 years ago now have 800 with 70 million dollars in debt. Buildings designed to host thousands now echo with hundreds.

1. Willow Creek Community Church 

Willow Creek Community Church is a large, non-denominational Evangelical megachurch founded in 1975 by Bill Hybes and headquartered in South Barrington Illinois. It was built to host 70, 000 worshippers. It hosted leadership conferences that drew 75, 000 people every year. It is now empty.

2. Harvest Bible Church 

Harvest Bible Church is generally referred to Independent Evangelical or Reformed Congregation, or Harvest Bible Church Network. The church was founded by James MacDonald in 1988. The church owned $70, 000 million church buildings . In just four years the church's membership dropped from 13, 000 to 1000. 

It declared bankruptcy in 2023. 

3. The Christ Cathedral 

The Christ Cathedral formerly known as Crystal Cathedral. It is a striking all-glass landmark. It invented televised church services was sold to the Catholic Church after bankruptcy. It used to have 15 locations across multiple states. By 2015, all 15 were closed.

These are empires collapsing. In 2023 mega churches attendances dropped by 18% with donations down by 23% and 40% of mega churches considered selling properties because the buildings are too big and the debt too large. And the people are not coming back.

In 1990 America has 300 mega churches . By 2020, it rose to 1000. The growth looked unstoppable. Pastors became celebrities, church buildings became entertainment complexes and the money flowed like never before.

This is what will happen in Nigeria in the nearest future.

Today Africa is having their taste of massive church growth. Tomorrow, they will be all gone.

THIS is what happens when you invest in physical church buildings instead of investing in the true church, that is, the church members.

Physical church buildings will collapse. It is the spiritual church that will stand forever.

This is why I said that Nigerian big pastors are wasting money building vanities.
