AN OPEN LETTER TO REVEREND MUHAMMAD MUHAMMAD: SIR, BOYS BRIGADE SHOULD DEMAN AK47 TOO

With all due respect, sir, I was tagged in your video where you called on the Nigerian government to caution a particular sect of Muslims who were seen singing and exercising in Islamic attire, reportedly chanting words that, in translation, called for AK-47s to be given to them so they could go to Enugu and Jos, enter churches, meet infidels, rejoicing and clapping and unalive them.

Sir, I understand that this is not something anybody should dismiss as an ordinary song. A threat to human lives must be taken seriously, regardless of the religion of those making it.

However, Reverend Muhammad Muhammad, I have said this before, and I will say it again: WE NEED MORE THAN CHRISTIAN LEADERS CALLING ON THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO PROTECT US. WE NEED CHRISTIAN LEADERS TO PREPARE US TO PROTECT OURSELVES.

Sir, with all due respect, we have heard enough sermons about turning the other cheek. We have heard enough about enduring persecution. But where are the teachings about courage, self-preservation, and the responsibility to protect innocent lives?

Why must Christians always be reminded to remain peaceful, even when they feel threatened? Why can't we have equally strong teachings on standing up against oppression, reporting threats, demanding justice, and refusing to surrender our safety to people who may wish us harm?

PEACE DOES NOT MEAN HELPLESSNESS. FORGIVENESS DOES NOT MEAN REFUSING TO PROTECT YOUR LIFE. AND BEING A CHRISTIAN DOES NOT MEAN YOU SHOULD BECOME AN EASY TARGET.

If somebody comes to you with love, give them love. If somebody wants peace, give them peace. But if somebody threatens your life, take that threat seriously and do everything necessary to protect yourself and those around you.

Sir, the people threatening others are human beings, just like the people they threaten. We cannot continue to behave as though Christians have no agency, no voice, and no physical strength to defend themselves.

I am a lover of peace. I believe in unity between Muslims and Christians. I believe that people of different faiths can live together without hatred. But let me make something clear: I WILL NEVER CELEBRATE COWARDICE IN THE NAME OF RELIGION, NOR WILL I CONFUSE PEACEFULNESS WITH HELPLESSNESS.

I want Christians who can love their Muslim neighbours without fear, defend their faith without insulting another person's religion, and stand up for their rights without becoming aggressors themselves.

And sir, If some people are being taught from childhood to despise Christians and other non-Muslims, what exactly are their religious and community leaders doing to correct such teachings?

I once shared a video of a little boy who reportedly said he could not learn English because English was for infidels. Imagine the kind of mindset a child could develop when hatred is presented to him as religious knowledge.

Of course, one video cannot tell us what an entire religious community believes. There are peaceful Muslims who reject extremism, and they deserve to be acknowledged. But we must also stop pretending that dangerous teachings do not exist simply because discussing them makes people uncomfortable. IRIN SU NAKE MAGANA A KAI.

IF RELIGIOUS LEADERS CAN TEACH THEIR FOLLOWERS HOW TO WORSHIP, THEY MUST ALSO TEACH THEM HOW TO RESPECT THE LIVES AND DIGNITY OF PEOPLE WHO WORSHIP DIFFERENTLY. AMMA IDAN BAZAI SAMU BA, CHRISTIANS MUST BEGIN TO SPEAK THE VERY LANGUAGE THEIR OPRESSORS UNDERSTAND.

And to our Christian religious leaders, please, we need more than statements of condemnation after every disturbing video. We need consistent advocacy, accountability, practical guidance, and the courage to demand that the authorities investigate credible threats and protect every Nigerian, regardless of faith.

When people are openly calling for weapons to attack worshippers, the answer must not be to wait until innocent people are killed before we begin to act.

WE DO NOT NEED CHRISTIANS TO BECOME PERSECUTORS. WE NEED CHRISTIANS TO STOP BEING TREATED AS THOUGH THEY MUST REMAIN HELPLESS VICTIMS.

Reverend Muhammad Muhammad, sir, with all due respect, we need more than calls for government intervention. We need leadership that teaches peace without weakness, forgiveness without foolishness, and love without surrendering our right to live safely.

Because at the end of the day, every Nigerian deserves to worship without fear of being attacked in a church, a mosque, or anywhere else.

PEACE MUST BE A MUTUAL RESPONSIBILITY, NOT A BURDEN PLACED ON ONE SIDE ALONE.

Thank you, sir.
