When I finally arrived in the United States, 𝗜 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗼. I had boarded that plane simply because I desperately wanted to leave Guinea.

I arrived late at night, hoping to stay in a hotel, but most were fully booked, others way too expensive. I reached out to a sister I knew if I could spend the night, but she declined because she feared my people.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗜 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗽 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 it 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹, not because I was sick but because roaming outside at midnight was not safe.

With nearly all my money gone, I began searching for a job, to start life all over again.

One day, while going to for a job interview, . 𝗜 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱. He saw me too, and I noticed him taking out his phone. I suspected he was about to inform my people that I was back in America, but I simply continued on my way.

A few days later, a pastor I knew in Guinea, who was also close to my people, called me.

“𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨.𝗦.?” he asked. When I asked how, he explained that someone had seen me.

At that point, I wasn’t ready to reconnect with my people. I was still trying to recover from the trauma. Although God has taught me to love, 𝗜 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹. It was painful all the put me through in the name of religion. But I thank God who gives us the grace to forgive and let go. Eventually I started reconnecting with them.

I can only imagine their surprise when they discovered I had returned to America without their help.

Through everything I went through, one lesson has stayed with me:

𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗡 𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗜𝗥 𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗣, 𝗚𝗢𝗗 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗥𝗔𝗜𝗦𝗘 𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗣 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗘𝗟𝗦𝗘𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘.

The 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗮, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝘆 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗹.
