| Suspect: Joseph who was also a Youth Pastor at Christ Embassy |
She went to collect ₦50,000 from someone she trusted.
She never came home.
In Okaka, Bayelsa State, a routine debt collection turned into a horrifying discovery that left an entire community stunned.
Catherine was a hardworking young woman who made a living selling men’s and women’s clothing. Among her customers was Joseph, a young man who was also a youth pastor at Christ Embassy—the same church Catherine attended.
Because they shared the same faith and knew each other personally, Catherine trusted him enough to sell him clothes on credit.
Joseph still owed her ₦50,000.
For some time, Catherine waited patiently for him to pay.
Then she decided it was time to collect her money.
Before leaving home, she reportedly told her mother where she was going. She headed to Joseph’s residence expecting nothing more than a quick conversation and the settlement of an unpaid debt.
But Catherine never returned.
As the hours passed, her family became increasingly worried. Night eventually fell, but there was still no sign of her.
Her phone rang.
Again.
And again.
But nobody answered.
The following morning, Catherine’s mother went straight to Joseph’s residence, desperate to know what had happened to her daughter.
Joseph reportedly appeared calm.
According to the account, he told Catherine’s mother that Catherine had already visited him, collected her money, and left.
But something about his explanation did not sit right with her.
She refused to leave.
Standing outside the apartment, she repeatedly called Catherine’s phone and shouted her daughter’s name.
Then, convinced that something was terribly wrong, she forced her way inside.
Catherine was nowhere to be seen.
But near the entrance, her mother noticed something that immediately raised suspicion.
A patch of ground looked freshly disturbed.
There was a mound of sand where there shouldn’t have been one.
She screamed.
Neighbors rushed toward the apartment.
Young men from the area began digging into the suspicious patch of earth.
And within moments, their worst fears were confirmed.
They uncovered Catherine’s lifeless body in a shallow grave inside the apartment.
Blood was reportedly visible around her face.
The discovery sent shockwaves through the neighborhood.
Overcome with grief and anger, Catherine’s mother confronted Joseph and dragged him outside, demanding justice.
Police officers were called to the scene and took Joseph into custody before the situation could escalate into mob violence.
As news of the discovery spread, rumors quickly began circulating online, with some people alleging that the killing was connected to ritual activity.
But those claims were not established by the information available.
What remains especially disturbing is the question of what really happened inside that apartment.
Was the ₦50,000 debt truly the reason Catherine went there?
Did an argument or confrontation occur?
Or was the unpaid money simply the reason she was lured to the residence?
Those questions can only be answered by a proper investigation and the evidence gathered by authorities.
For Catherine’s family, however, one fact remains painfully clear:
She left home expecting to collect money from someone she trusted.
She never returned.
And the person she went to see was ultimately taken into police custody in connection with her death.
The case serves as a devastating reminder that danger can sometimes hide behind familiar faces—and that trust should never be mistaken for safety.
This post condemns violence.
