The day I studied Shia vs Sunni Islam was the day I understood that peace will be far for a long time in the Middle East and anywhere these two sects are present .

Shia Islam is predominantly in Iran , while Sunni is predominantly in Saudi .

The animosity goes back to shortly after prophet Muhammad died .

One of the gravest atrocities committed by the Sunnis was that they killed the prophets grandson in battle and his cousins who happened to be the children of Imam Ali .

The Sunni accept monarchy as a form of government.

The Shia believe that since the prophet was an imam , an imam should be the leader of the nation . They want all monarchies to end in Islamic nations . 

Saudi and Iran can never be friends .

They are ideological enemies .

Now both nations are battling for control of Islamic nations .

The Sunnis sponsored Al- Queda the terror group , the Shia sponsor Hamas . 

They both use their surrogates against each other .

The average Nigerian Muslim is influenced by the Sunni through their Wahhabism theology. This theology became popular in the 70’s when the Saudi imams pushed for a more conservative society against one that was becoming westernized. It was after this period that cinemas where closed and all forms of secularism was removed from that nation .

The average Fulani is Sunni , so is the average Muslim in Nigeria . The Shia are very persecuted my the Sunni . Imam Al- zakzaky is a Shia imam who doesn’t recognize the government in Nigeria . As a Shia he believes Nigeria should be an Islamic caliphate under the rule of a Shia imam . This is why the Sunni Nigerian government have him in prison .

The truth is that the issues we have in Nigeria are deeply ideological. 

Deeply .

But it is important that common sense prevail .

Nigeria is a secular state .

You cannot use politics to make her an Islamic state .

If you want to spread Islam do so by preaching and letting people choose .

When you start using guns , swords to force conversion then you are telling us that your religion cannot be accepted except force is used .

I don’t believe Islam advocates this in its purity . 

Choice .

Religion must be via choice not politics or sword .

Choice .

Sadly, many belief systems in some Islamic sect don’t accept this .
